Hometown Hockey construction on track; some parking interruptions planned

Feb 6, 2017 | 9:46 AM

NANAIMO – Preparations continue for the Rogers Hometown Hockey Event in Nanaimo on Feb. 25 and 26.

Work is being done at Maffeo-Sutton Park, where most of the festivities will be, according to parks operations manager Al Britton.

“Right now we are creating an outdoor skating rink at Maffeo-Sutton Park,” he said. “Then we’ll also be creating a floating platform in the middle of Swy-a-lana Lagoon with a zip line going over head.”

Pieces of the floating dock will be delivered on Monday and Wednesday, so parking in the roundabout will be unavailable until 4 p.m. on both days. Britton said they’re asking for some co-operation as they try to limit the impact on visitors to the park.

“Basically what we’re doing is asking the public to be aware of what’s going on around them while the construction is going on,” he said. “We’re trying to keep as much eyes open for the public as possible, but we’re asking the public to be aware of the surroundings while they’re down there.”

Britton said they’re on schedule for finishing construction by Feb. 25.

“Right now we are in progress. We’re probably still at least a week away from having anything pretty much close to completion.”

Residents will start seeing Hometown Hockey street banners around the city. A full list of events is available at the city website.
