Clippers winning streak ends with 3-0 loss in Vernon

Jan 29, 2017 | 1:19 AM

VERNON – A close game through 40 minutes turned into a 3-0 loss for the Clippers on the road against the Vipers.

The game was scoreless after one, and scoreless after two, but Vernon was able to break through with three goals in a 12 minute span in the third period.

Austin Adamson stole a puck and walked out front two minutes into the period, then Niko Karamanis scored on a rebound, and Adamson converted on a two on one to give the Vipers the win.

Nanaimo outshot Vernon 39-30 with Darion Hanson getting the shutout, while Evan DeBrouwer took the loss for the Clippers.

On special teams Nanaimo went 0/5 on the power play, and the Clippers actually had a five on three for 36 seconds in the first period but failed to score.

They were also 4/4 on the penalty kill.

The loss meant the Vipers won the season series 3-0 and outscored Nanaimo 14-6 along the way.

There was good news on Saturday night as the Cowichan Valley Capitals lost 5-0 to Wenatchee and the Alberni Valley Bulldogs took a 6-2 loss to Victoria.

That leaves the Clippers three points behind the Capitals in the Island Division standings and four points ahead of the Bulldogs.

Nanaimo’s road trip continues Sunday in Surrey with a 4 p.m. game against the Eagles.
