Clippers complete weekend sweep of Bulldogs with 3-2 OT win

Jan 23, 2017 | 5:24 AM

PORT ALBERNI – For the first time since the end of October the Clippers have a two game winning streak.

In the process they beat their island rivals the Bulldogs 3-0 and 3-2 in overtime.

Saturday’s OT win featured a late comeback and extended Nanaimo’s lead over the Dogs for the final divisional playoff spot to four points.

The first period was scoreless but Vincent Millette got the Clippers on the board midway through the second.

Nanaimo appeared to get a second goal late in the period but it was waved off and Lucas Finner was assessed two minutes for delay of game and two more minutes for unsportsmanlike conduct.

Jake Witkowski scored on that power play to even the score after 40 minutes.

Early in the third period Nicholas Rasovic beat Evan DeBrouwer on a penalty shot and the Bulldogs lead held up until late in the game.

Jake Harris made a rush down the left wing with just over two minutes left and his centring pass deflected behind Brody Claeys to send the game to overtime.

Early in four-on-four, Jamie Collins stole the puck and walked in to score the winner, his second OT winner of the season.

Nanaimo outshot Alberni 43-38 with the power plays finishing 2/6 for the Bulldogs and 0/6 for the Clippers.

There are still two games left in the season series but up next for Nanaimo is a three game road trip to Salmon Arm, Vernon, and Surrey starting Jan. 27.
