Flood warnings rising with recent thaw

NANAIMO — With warmer weather and a melting snowpack, the threat of floods is rising in the Nanaimo region.

This morning, Jan. 18, a High Streamflow advisory was issued for all of Vancouver Island.

Daniel Pearce, acting general manager of Transportation and Emergency Services with the Regional District of Nanaimo, said they and firefighters were on the ground this morning monitoring riverbanks.

“With the rainfall, mixed with the snowpack that’s melting right now, mixed with high-tide events, there’s definitely a chance of flooding in the district of Nanaimo,” he said.

Thankfully the Nanaimo River didn’t flood, though Pearce said they’ll be continually monitoring the situation as the snowpack continues to melt.

In case a flood watch or warning is declared, Pearce said it was crucial for families to have a go-bag, which contains food, first aid and temporary shelter such as tents, and be in constant contact with their neighbours to make sure no one if left behind.

He highlighted the region’s Emergency Social Services program, which is in place to help flooded families find dry shelter as their possessions become waterlogged.
