Truck that crossed centre line caused fatal crash in Errington: RCMP

Jan 18, 2017 | 12:05 PM

PARKSVILLE — A dump truck crossed the centre line just prior to a crash that killed a woman driving an oncoming car on Highway 4A in Errington, according to the RCMP.

Central Island Traffic Services Cpl. Mike Elston says police aren’t sure why the eastbound dump truck-trailer combo veered into oncoming traffic on Tuesday morning.

“It’s a relatively straight road, it was just near a bend…but we’re not really considering that road character was an issue, we’re also not looking at speed,” said Elston.

Elston says the truck driver was not hurt and is fully cooperating with police. He adds that alcohol or any other kind of impairment were not factors. Elston notes a mechanical inspection of the truck and trailer is scheduled to happen Thursday.

Elston says there is only one eyewitness at this time — motorist who was following the dump truck driver for a few minutes prior to the crash.

“We don’t have any other eyewitnesses, there was very little traffic on the road at the time, we have people who arrived on scene shortly there after,” said Elston.

He’s asking anybody else who saw the crash to contact Oceanside RCMP.

Elston says police will be working further with the driver and company to help figure out how the incident happened.

Images from the scene captured by CHEK News show the truck involved belongs to Sinclair Trucking.

Highway 4A was closed in both directions at Errington Rd. for most of the day while police investigated.

The woman’s identity has not been released.
