FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Esteban Santiago, the former Army soldier held in the mass killing inside the Fort Lauderdale airport, was told Monday that he could face a death sentence.
The 26-year-old Iraq war veteran from Anchorage, Alaska, was ordered held on charges including committing violence against people at an international airport resulting in death, and with two firearms offences. Santiago’s hearing Monday was only the beginning of what will likely be a lengthy journey through the federal court system following the shooting, which killed five people and wounded six others at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.
