UPDATE: Kayaker, 23, found dead south of Courtenay: RCMP

COMOX VALLEY — A tragic end to the search for a missing kayaker south of Courtenay.

Comox Valley RCMP have confirmed that the man, 23, from Courtenay, was found dead by the RCMP’s Underwater Recovery Team.

His body was found around 4 p.m. Sunday, according to Mounties.

COMOX VALLEY — The search is on for a man who went missing while trying to make a late-night kayak journey from Union Bay.

Comox Valley RCMP say two men, both 23, left Union Bay in kayaks around 11 p.m. Saturday night. On their way to Tree Island, north of Denman Island, the kayaks were swamped and only one of the men was able to make it back to shore, according to police.

Mounties say a large-scale search started at about 12:40 a.m. Sunday, including help from the RCMP West Coast Marine Section Dive Team, three Coast Guard vessels and a Cormorant Helicopter from 19 Wing, Comox. 

Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue is conducting shoreline searches.

According to a release, the search was still very active by mid-day Sunday.
