Clippers road trip begins with 6-2 loss to the Wild

Dec 17, 2016 | 2:09 AM

WENATCHEE — It was a busy night for Clippers’ goalie Austin Roden as Nanaimo fell 6-2 to the Wenatchee Wild.

The final shots were announced 63-22 in a game that boosted the Wild’s home ice record to 16-0.

Wenatchee had the advantage in shots on goal throughout the first period but the Clippers kept them at bay for the first 15 minutes.

But a transition goal by AJ Vanderbeck and a late power play goal from the BCHL’s goal scoring leader Charlie Combs put the Wild up 2-0 by the end of the first frame.

Matt Creamer cut into the lead in the first minute of the second, only to have the Wild forge back ahead on a power play goal from Troy Conzo and a rebound tally by Chris Jones.

With just 10 seconds left in the middle frame David Eccles got his first goal as a Clipper, but they couldn’t keep the momentum going into the third.

Goals by Charlie Combs and Sam Morton ended the scoring, while extending a Wenatchee streak to 11 straight games with at least one point.

There were only three power plays in the game and Nanaimo was 0/1 while the Wild finished 2/2.

The Clippers head to West Kelowna Saturday for a rematch of last season’s game eight in round three of the playoffs.

The Warriors won that game in overtime and went on to win the Fred Page Cup and the RBC Cup.
