Clippers drop fourth straight against the Grizzlies with 5-2 setback

VICTORIA — It’s been a struggle for the Clippers against their division rivals from Victoria this year.

Nanaimo is 0-4 after a 5-2 setback on Sunday afternoon at the Q Centre. The Clippers had leads of 1-0 and 2-1 but the Grizzlies took over the game in the second half.

Tristan Crozier opened the scoring in the first period, finishing off a broken play, but Jamie Rome tied the score on a blast from the right wing. Sean Buchanan converted on a power play early in the second period, but then the Grizzlies would score four straight times en route to the victory.

Rome tied the game shorthanded later in the second period and Nick Guiney scored from against the right boards with under two minutes to play in the middle frame. That second period also included a Clipper five-on-three for almost a full two minutes, but the league’s best penalty killing held the fort.

Cameron Thompson added some insurance before Timothy Friedmann popped home an empty netter.

Nanaimo had some positives on the stat line, outshooting the Grizzlies 30-26 and going 1/6 on the power play and 4/4 killing penalties.

The Clippers have been outscored 16-6 in the season series, with the next game slated for Wednesday, Jan. 4 at Frank Crane Arena.

That’s also Nanaimo’s next home game with the team wrapping up 2016 with four straight on the road. 

This weekend the Clippers play in Wenatchee Friday, West Kelowna Saturday and Coquitlam Sunday.
