The Latest: Globe nominations leave out some big names

Yet January’s ceremony will leave out several top names, including directors Clint Eastwood’s “Sully,” Martin Scorsese’s “Silence” and Warren Beatty’s “Rules Don’t Apply.” Passing on “Sully” also means no nomination for Tom Hanks.

The Hollywood Foreign Press Association nominated Jessica Chastain for her fourth Globe since 2012 for “Miss Sloane,” a film that failed to connect with audiences and many critics.

Mahershala Ali doesn’t normally wake up in a chatty mood, but his supporting actor Golden Globe Award nomination for “Moonlight” is forcing him to change that.

Ali says, “I don’t think I ever have talked this much this early in the morning.”

His nomination was announced Monday in Beverly Hills around 5:20 a.m., and the actor’s phone soon started ringing in his Los Angeles home.

Ali says the praise, and increasing awards season attention for “Moonlight,” has been gratifying. The film’s six nominations are most for any drama film for this year’s Globes ceremony. It won’t compete head-to-head against “La La Land,” which received seven nominations but is vying for the best comedy or musical film.

“Moonlight” director Barry Jenkins praised Ali on Monday, saying the actor delivered an outstanding performance despite also working on the Netflix series “Luke Cage” at the time. Jenkins says Ali gave “Moonlight” his full attention and “it shows because he just brings so much warmth and humanity to the part.”

By his own admission, director Barry Jenkins’ plans after learning about his Golden Globe nominations are not exciting — he’s going to do his laundry.

But don’t feel bad for him. Jenkins says he likes doing laundry, and it’s a necessary chore after spending two weeks travelling. He jokes, “It’s therapeutic and it keeps me grounded.”

Jenkins is nominated for “Moonlight,” which received the second most Globes nominations of any film and has the most nominations in the drama category.

The director says he’s grateful for all the nominations, including a supporting actor nod for Mahershala Ali. He says, “It fills my heart.”

“Moonlight” tells the story of a young man’s life in Miami and has emerged as a strong Academy Awards contender. It won’t compete head-to-head against the top-nominated film, “La La Land,” at January’s Golden Globes because the show bestows separate awards for dramas and comedies or musicals.

Isabelle Huppert’s Golden Globe nomination is just one part of a whirlwind day.

The “Elle” actress says she was in the middle of interviews for her next film role when her phone started buzzing with congratulatory messages.

It was a welcome surprise in a jam-packed day, with Huppert speaking to The Associated Press while travelling from France to Luxembourg to perform in a play.

Somehow, Huppert still found some time to celebrate. She says she managed to have champagne with a couple of friends before heading to her gig.

Huppert heaped praise on “Elle” director Paul Verhoeven, who she says she had total confidence in. “Elle,” which was also nominated in the best foreign film category, has received some criticism for its portrayal of a video game executive who seeks revenge against the man who raped her.

Lily Collins is sharing the moment she learned she had been nominated for her first major Hollywood acting award.

The “Rules Don’t Apply” actress posted a photo on Instagram of her with one hand over her mouth in stunned surprise at Monday’s announcement by the Golden Globes that she was nominated for best actress in a film musical or comedy.

She wrote that her mother snapped the photo and she was in disbelief. The actress wrote she is “Beyond honoured, thankful, and proud. This can’t be real!”

The image received more than 1,000 comments and has been liked more than 95,000 times an hour after it was posted.

Hailee Steinfeld, another first-time Globe nominee, also shared her elation online. Steinfeld wrote on Twitter that she was in tears — and aboard a plane that’s about to take off.

Steinfeld was also nominated as best actress in a musical or comedy film for “Edge of Seventeen.”

Mel Gibson is back in the awards season mix after the Golden Globe Awards nominated him for best director for “Hacksaw Ridge.”

The actor has largely been a pariah in Hollywood since his 2006 drunken driving arrest in which he launched into an anti-Semitic tirade. “Hacksaw Ridge” is the first film Gibson has directed in a decade, although he starred in 2011’s “The Beaver” and other films since his arrest.

Gibson’s conduct, including a separate rant against an ex-girlfriend, was mocked by Globes host Ricky Gervais in 2010 and the men exchanged barbs onstage at last year’s ceremony.

Gibson won a Golden Globe for best director in 1996 for “Braveheart.” He went on to win a pair of Academy Awards for the film.

“Hacksaw Ridge,” which stars Andrew Garfield, has received widespread critical acclaim.

Ryan Reynolds isn’t taking his Golden Globe nomination for the comic book film “Deadpool” too seriously.

The actor wrote on Twitter that “the entire Deadpool team is engaged in a grotesque, early morning tickle-fight.”

Reynolds plays a wise-cracking assassin in “Deadpool” and its upcoming sequel. He was nominated for best actor in a film comedy or musical, a rare awards show nomination for a superhero portrayal.

The actor’s post Monday included a picture of his character in a holiday sweater and Santa hat.

Damien Chazelle’s Los Angeles musical “La La Land” sang and danced its way to a leading seven Golden Globes nominations, with Barry Jenkins’ celebrated coming-of-age tale “Moonlight” close on its heels with six nods.

“La La Land” earned nominations for its lead actors, Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, as well best picture, comedy or musical. Chazelle is also among those up for best director in the nominations announced Monday by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.

“Moonlight” led the field in the dramatic categories, including best picture. The other nominees for best picture, drama, were “Manchester by the Sea,” ”Lion,” ”Hell or High Water” and Mel Gibson’s “Hacksaw Ridge.”

Meryl Streep landed her 30th nomination for best actress in a musical or comedy for “Florence Foster Jenkins.”

Sound checks and other final preparations are underway for the announcement of this year’s Golden Globe Awards .

Reporters gathered early Monday at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, where nominations for top film and television performances will be announced. Don Cheadle, Anna Kendrick and Laura Dern will announce the nominees on a stage flanked by two oversized Golden Globe Award statues.

Some of those in attendance snapped selfies in front of the stage Monday.

The winners will be announced on Jan. 8 in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Fallon and broadcast by NBC.

Nominations for the 74th annual Golden Globes will be announced Monday morning from Beverly Hills, California.

The nominations will be streamed live online, beginning at 8:20 a.m. EST. Among the films expected to take in a number of nods are the nostalgic Los Angeles musical “La La Land,” the lyrical coming-of-age tale “Moonlight” and the August Wilson adaptation “Fences.” On the television side, HBO’s sci-fi puzzle “Westworld” could be in for a big morning.

Meryl Streep, a 29-time nominee, will be the recipient of the Cecil B. DeMille Award. Streep may also add a 30th nod to her resume for her lead performance in the period comedy “Florence Foster Jenkins.”

The Jan. 8 Golden Globes will be hosted by Jimmy Fallon and broadcast by NBC from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
