VIDEO: Collins plays hero in Clippers 4-3 OT win over Wenatchee

Dec 9, 2016 | 11:09 PM

NANAIMO — It may have been a Wild night at Frank Crane Arena but it was Jamie Collins who was the hero for the Clippers.

Collins book ended the scoring with the opening goal on a penalty shot to trigger the Teddy Bear Toss, and the closing goal with 12 seconds left in three-on-three overtime.

The Clippers built up a 2-0 first period lead when Matt Creamer converted on an odd man rush mid-way through the period. The BCHL’s leading scorer Brendan Harris cut the lead with a goal for Wenatchee in the final minute of the opening stanza.

Wenatchee tied the game with only four seconds left in the second period on a sharp angle shot from Logan Milliken.

In the third period the teams traded goals, with Spencer Hewson beating Devin Cooley with a long range wrist shot, and Austin Chavez sneaking a late shot through Austin Roden to send the game to extra time.

Four-on-four didn’t produce any scoring and on the final shift of three-on-three Jamie Collins walked out of the corner and outwaited Cooley to give the Clippers a 4-3 overtime win.

It was Nanaimo’s second OT win of the season, and improved their December record to 2-1-0-1.

Wenatchee outshot the Clippers 41-27 and the Wild had the only two power plays on the night going 0/2.

Next Friday the same two teams will battle again at the Town Toyota Centre in Wenatchee.

In the meantime both clubs have a date with the Grizzlies in Victoria.

Wenatchee will visit the Grizzlies on Saturday night and the Clippers are at the Q Centre Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m.
