Suspect in fatal Montreal carjacking now linked to second homicide

Dec 5, 2016 | 3:00 AM

MONTREAL — A single suspect is connected to the death of a Montreal woman whose car was hijacked and the slaying of a young man in an apartment, police said Monday.

Major-crimes investigators say both events are linked to a 21-year-old man who was cornered in a town south of Montreal after a lengthy chase.

“There is a link between the two events and … in the sequence of events there is a link,” said Montreal police spokesman Daniel Lacoursiere.

But Lacoursiere said there was no connection between the victims.

The suspect, who is known to police, remained in custody as of Monday and had not yet appeared in court. Police said earlier they were hoping to question him while investigators combed through no fewer than five crime scenes.

Police were alerted to a carjacking late Sunday night in a gas station parking lot in the Pointe-aux-Trembles neighbourhood in the eastern part of the city.

The victim, a 49-year-old woman, was shot during the incident.

Montreal police spokesman Raphael Bergeron said witnesses saw the suspect flee in the woman’s car.

“Police officers found her and she was transported quickly to hospital where she unfortunately died later on overnight,” Bergeron said.

Not long after the shooting, the woman’s vehicle was involved in an accident and was ditched, police said.

Authorities then received a 911 call from a man claiming a gun-wielding individual was at his door demanding his car keys.

The suspect shot through the door and police said the man suffered injuries that were not life-threatening.

After allegedly stealing the second vehicle, the suspect led officers on the lengthy chase.

The vehicle was found in a ditch near a shopping mall at the intersection of two major highways in Brossard.

The suspect was apprehended by Longueuil police in a parking lot after a short pursuit on foot.

Later on Monday, homicide detectives were able to establish a link between the suspect and the discovery of the body of a man in his 20s in an east-end apartment earlier Sunday evening.
