Grizzlies beat Clippers in entertaining 1-0 game

Nov 25, 2016 | 8:54 PM

NANAIMO – Just one goal. It seems simple enough, but with the way Matthew Galajda and the Victoria defense was playing on Friday night, the Clippers couldn’t get one.

Victoria defeated Nanaimo 1-0 at Frank Crane Arena, with Nathan Looysen getting the only goal late in the second period.

The Clippers didn’t have their ‘A’ game in the first period when they were outshot 16-5, but Evan DeBrouwer was sharp in net. The Clippers took the momentum back in the second period by outshooting the Grizzlies 14-8, however Looysen’s one-timer off a backdoor pass was the only shot to beat either goaltender.

Jake Harris and Adam Pilotte both had great chances in the second period but failed to score by just inches. Nanaimo also had a goal waved off after the referees ruled the puck never crossed the goalline.

Both teams took turns having strong shifts in the third period but neither could score.

Again Harris had a wonderful chance from in close but couldn’t get a shot from the slot to fall his way.

The final shots finished 31-29 for the Clippers and neither team could get a goal on the man advantage.

Victoria’s league best PK was 4/4 and Nanaimo’s third best PK was 5/5.

The same two teams battle Saturday night at the Q Centre as their eight game season series is now underway.
