Late night ferry ride out of Duke Point turns into an all nighter

NANAIMO — A late night ferry ride turned into an all nighter for 21 passengers leaving Duke Point Wednesday.

The 10:45 p.m. sailing was already delayed for an hour because of a problem with the foot passenger walkway.

Then the Queen of New Westminster was unable to dock in Tsawwassen because of high winds.

BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall says the captain had to wait until 6:45 a.m. Thursday morning before docking the vessel.

“Before heading out the crew had checked the weather forecast,” said Marshall. “Unfortunately the winds did not abate as they had predicted. The captain did make an attempt to dock at Tsawwassen but that attempt was aborted because it was too windy. So they did the prudent thing and they held off until the winds came down.”

Marshall says their crew tried to accommodate the passengers who had a surprise extended stay.

“We were certainly doing what we could on board the vessel offering them any meals that they would have liked. Tea and coffee, things like that trying to make them comfortable. Our customer care department will be following up with every customer, said Marshall.

Because of the incident BC Ferries canceled the Queen of New Westminster’s 5:15 a.m. sailing out of Tsawwassen Thursday morning and the 7:45 a.m. leaving Duke Point.
