Wait times for treatment in B.C. highest ever recorded, report shows

Nov 23, 2016 | 2:39 PM

VICTORIA — B.C. Health Minister Terry Lake takes issue with the latest report from the Fraser Institute, showing the median wait times for medically necessary procedures in this province now sit at 25.2 weeks.

That’s the longest period ever recorded in B.C., but Lake believes the numbers are inflated by patients who have waited the longest for tests such as MRI’s but who have now been treated.

He says his ministry has earmarked $80-million over four years to cut wait times and he’s confident that, with the longest-waiting patients now off the list, next year’s Fraser Institute tally will show a marked decline.

The Fraser Institute says a mean wait time of 20 weeks for medical treatment across Canada should “trouble all Canadians.”
