Nanaimo ends dismal road trip with 4-1 loss in Chilliwack

CHILLIWACK – On the final day of the Clippers mainland road trip the game was up for grabs until the final period.

In the end, the Chilliwack Chiefs skated away with a 4-1 victory on Sunday.

Carver Watson buried a cross-ice pass behind Austin Roden to make the score 1-0 after the first period and Chiefs captain Jordan Kawaguchi upped the lead to 2-0 midway through the second with a shot from the slot. In the last minute of the second period Myles Cunningham scored Nanaimo’s only goal when his point shot overpowered Mark Sinclair’s glove hand on a Clipper’ power play.

The Chiefs got some insurance when Watson batted a puck out of mid-air on a Chilliwack man advantage. Nanaimo pressed in the final few minutes until Jake Smith added an empty netter to make the game 4-1. The final shots finished 29-17 for the Chiefs and the power plays ended up 1/5 for Chilliwack and 1/8 for Nanaimo.

Nanaimo returns home from the long three-game trip with only a single point. Now the Clippers turn their attention to the Victoria Grizzlies, who they’ll face in a home and home series starting Friday in Nanaimo.
