Annual food drive hits the streets in Parksville

PARKSVILLE – The Parksville Fire Department will be going door-to-door Saturday and Sunday for their annual food drive, their biggest event of the year.

The Parksville Fire Department will be helped out by other area departments including Dashwood, Errington, Hilliers and Qualicum Beach.

Parksville department spokesman Mark Chandler says they’ll be collecting the usual food bank staples.

“Peanut butter, canned fish, canned vegetables and obviously a variety of other things,” said Chandler. “But money goes quite a ways too and we do collect money with envelopes. That typically stretches out to two or three times the amount of the funds.”

Along with knocking on doors of houses, Chandler says they’ll be hoping for the continued generosity of people that live in apartments.

“Typically we don’t access apartments and this year we decided to up that a little bit,” he said. “Last year we put a program in place where we had boxes within the apartment buildings. This year we’re doing the same and last year was amazing how much we got from the apartments.”

Last year’s food drive brought in an estimated 25,000 pounds of food along with $5,000.
