Nanaimo cyclist suffers minor injuries after being hit by pick-up

NANAIMO — A cyclist was left with minor injuries after being hit in north-Nanaimo Tuesday night.

Police say the 26-year-old was in a crosswalk at Departure Bay Road and Wassel Road when she was run into by a pick-up traveling north.

RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien says it happened at around 6:20 p.m.

“Witnesses told police the female had turned on the amber lights,” said O’Brien. “The lights were flashing when a northbound truck on Departure Bay struck her broadside. She was thrown from her bike and the BC Paramedics attended. She suffered a minor elbow injury, was taken to hospital and later released.”

O’Brien says the cyclist was very hard to see and there will be no charges against the driver, who did stay at the scene and co-operate with police.

“She did not have reflective clothing on, she did not have a light on her bike, she had no reflectors and her helmet was a slate grey. Also the size of the helmet prevented her from looking left and right so she couldn’t make that eye contact with the driver,” said O’Brien.

According to O’Brien this incident should serve as a reminder that cyclists need to take steps to be seen, and that there is a shared responsibility for drivers, pedestrians and cyclists to look out for each other.
