Clippers doubled up 6-3 by Capitals

Nov 12, 2016 | 12:12 AM

DUNCAN – Two separate sequences of two goals against in less than a minute were Nanaimo’s downfall in a 6-3 loss to the Capitals.

It was a solid road start for the Clippers but they found themselves down 2-0 on goals by Michael Montambault and Ayden MacDonald.

Montabault’s goal bounced off a skate and in, while MacDonald’s was a controversial wraparound on a power play. There was an argument that there may have been a high stick earlier on the play.

Nanaimo took the play over for the rest of the period and Tristan Crozier scored on a good pass from Tate Coughlin.

The Clippers also had a five-on-three power power play late in opening period, but failed to score.

Adam Donnelly tied the game in second after Ben Solin fed him in front of the net.

But two goals in 20 seconds turned the game in the Capitals’ favour.

Montambault got his second of the night on a rebound and Sean Driscoll blasted home the 4-2 goal moments later.

Cowichan opened up a three goal lead in the third when Ayden MacDonald banked a shot in from the corner, but Tate Coughlin responded soon after wiring a shot from the right side.

George Sennott’s rebound power play goal made it 6-3 to give the Capitals the win and a 2-1 lead in the season series.

There were also two fights in the final period highlighted by Adam Donnelly. Nanaimo outshot Cowichan Valley 38-31 with Lane Michasiw getting the win over Evan DeBrouwer.

The Clippers went 0/5 on the power play and 1/3 killing penalties.

A busy week of hockey concludes for Nanaimo on Saturday with a home game at 6 p.m. versus Langley.
