Clippers earn a single point in 4-3 OT loss to Bulldogs

Nov 9, 2016 | 11:00 PM

PORT ALBERNI — The Clippers kept having to chase the game on Wednesday night in Port Alberni, but they did come up with a single point against the Bulldogs.

Nanaimo had a strong first period but a couple of bad breaks in the final five minutes put them behind the eight ball.

A seeing-eye shot from Trevor Cosgrove found the back of the net, and in the final minute a crazy bounce ended up going behind Austin Roden on a goal credited to Alex MacDonald.

In the second period the Clippers came out flying, even though they had an early penalty.

Captain Spencer Hewson stayed with a loose puck in front of the net to get his fourth goal of the season.

The game stayed that way into the third until Austin Crossley beat Brody Claeys with a long range shot from the blueline for his first BCHL goal.

Nanaimo had an impressive five-on-three penalty kill in the period, but shortly after gave up a goal from down low on the right side to Ryan Steele.

It came at the end of a sequence where the teams were trading offensive chances.

With under two minutes to play the Clippers got the tying goal from David Silye. His quick shot from the right side sent the game into overtime.

Both teams had power play chances in overtime, but Jake Witkowski’s rebound goal in three-on-three double OT gave the Bulldogs the win.

Nanaimo outshot Alberni Valley 40-33 with the Clippers going 0/4 on the power play and 6/6 killing penalties.

The single point earned lifts the Clippers into a third place tie with Cowichan Valley in the Island Division standings.

Those two teams play head-to-head Friday night in Duncan.
