Political commentator says ‘burn the campaign manual’ after Trump’s victory

NANAIMO — Maybe Donald Trump is a political genius.

He has come across to many as childish, arrogant, and a buffoon but he is now the most important man in America. Political commentator Allan Warnke says even though Trump was a business man and an outsider to the world of politics, alot of voters felt that was exactly what the U.S. needed.

“For 100 per cent of the time he did everything totally contrary to what one would normally expect from a politician, and so now it’s quite clear you can take the campaign manual and burn it,” said Warnke.

Trump doesn’t fit the mold of what most people see as a statesman, and Warnke doesn’t think he wants to be looked at that way.

“He goes in with a certain persona now that he can be a real rough SOB,” said Warnke. “That will will suit him more and I frankly think he doesn’t care about the statesman bit. Trump is the kind of politician who has his own vision of where America is and where he fits in it.”

Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton may have won the debates and held a lead in the polls but voters gravitated towards Trump on election day. Warnke thinks Clinton probably needed to be more feisty during the campaign.

“He was going on a constant barrage about the crooked Hillary and all the rest of it. The best thing she could have done is show how tough she was and turn right around and slap him up a litte bit. That’s what the Americans want, they want someone who’s strong, who’ll stick up for themselves, and turning the other cheek doesn’t work. I’ll toss you a line – you don’t bring Mother Theresa to a gun fight.”

With pollsters once again getting an election wrong, the validity of election polls has come into question. Warnke believes that polling in the traditional sense is outdated.

“Polling is far more complex than it ever was before. It’s impossible to do an accurate poll anymore where you feel that you interview 700 people that you’re within a margin of error of a per cent or two, no I think we’re way past that,” said Warnke.

For better or for worse, Americans have hitched their wagons to Donald Trump. He’s promised to make America great again, and now it’s up to him to deliver.
