NANAIMO — The VIU Mariners women’s soccer team are provincial champions.

The Mariner women downed the number one ranked Douglas Royals 1-0 on Saturday evening at the PACWEST provincial championships in Burnaby. The Royals came into the game as not only the top seed, but also the defending B.C. champions.

Midfielder Madeline Dawson scored what turned out to be the game winning goal in the 29th minute. Emily Rowbotham earned the clean sheet in goal and was the player of the game.

The Mariners are no strangers to earning medals at the provincial level. VIU’s women’s team captured gold in 2014 and silver in 2015.
