Coroner says both teens hit on Nanaimo highway have died in hospital

NANAIMO — The Coroner has now released the name of the second teen. He is Humberto Alonso Robles of Mexico City. His age has been corrected to 16.

EARLIER:

The BC Coroners Service says two teens have died after being hit on the Island Highway in Nanaimo last Friday, Oct. 21.
 
The Coroner says the teens were crossing the highway eastbound at Mostar Road around 10:30 Friday night when they were hit by an SUV.
 
Police said at the time the driver had a green light and conditions were wet and dark.
 
One of the teens, a 15-year-old girl, has been identified as Maria Hildebrandt Cereija from Mexico City. The Coroner says she died in Victoria General Hospital on Monday afternoon.
 
A 17-year-old boy, also from Mexico, that was hit at the same time died in B.C. Children’s Hospital on Monday, according to the Coroner. His name is not being released yet.

Both teens were exchange students in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School District, according to Nanaimo RCMP.
