Youth summit encourages smart choices

Oct 26, 2016 | 10:06 AM

NANAIMO – An all day event Wednesday at Uplands Elementary School in Nanaimo is designed to help kids make better choices.

The Youth Entertainment Summit, or “Y.E.S 2 Know”, is meant to show students how they can make a positive impact.

Principal Lisa Robinson says the summit is usually held for students in grades 8 and 9.

“It’s actually the very first elementary summit being run in BC at the moment,” said Robinson. “With social media and so many changes happening in the world today and so much impact with media, we’ve decided to step it up a notch and take it to our elementary students.”

And while it’s a one day summit, Robinson says she hopes the message can be carried forward through the rest of the year.

“Reminding students that they all are a part of a larger community, they’re part off our school, they’re part of our Nanaimo community and they’re part of our planet,” said Robinson. “And we all have our very own footprint on the future. And we all have the power to make some positive changes for ourselves and it impacts everyone.”

The day includes a number of guest speakers and a variety of stations designed to spark interest and passion.
