Clippers sweep Interior road trip with 3-2 OT win in Merritt

Oct 16, 2016 | 5:14 PM

MERRITT – A rare feat for any island team is the three game sweep of the Interior Division.

The Clippers beat Trail, Penticton, and Merritt in consecutive games on the road to move to 8-5-0-1 on the season and exit the weekend with all six points.

On Sunday Nanaimo beat the Centennials 3-2 in overtime, thanks to a Lucas Finner goal in 3 on 3 OT.

Merritt opened the scoring a minute and a half in on a power play goal by Chase Bell.

Finner popped home a power play goal with three minutes left in the period to tie the game, but another goal on the man advantage by the Centennials Zach Risteau put Merritt up 2-1 after the first.

Matt Kowalski scored after converting a saucer pass from Ben Solin in the second period and the goalies Colton Lancaster and the Clippers Austin Roden shut the door until overtime.

Nanaimo killed off a power play late in regulation and then another in 4 on 4 OT to set the stage for Finner’s shot off the post and in, with just under two and a half minutes left in the second overtime.

The final shots were 40-39 for Nanaimo with the Clippers going 1/5 on the power play and 2/7 on the PK.

Overall Nanaimo has won four consecutive games with a home date against Cowichan Valley on Wednesday.

It’s the first head to head meeting of the season with both teams heading in with 17 points.
