Clippers snap Kings seven game winning streak

Oct 9, 2016 | 5:11 AM

NANAIMO — The Clippers snapped the Powell River Kings seven game winning streak with a 4-2 win at Frank Crane Arena on Saturday night.

Powell River took a 1-0 lead with the only goal of the first period when Liam Lawson converted a pass from in close on Clippers goalie Evan DeBrouwer.

Nanaimo came back with two goals in the second period from Tristan Crozier, taking a beautiful pass from Jamie Collins, and Lucas Finner who was set up by Will LeNeave.

Lawson scored again to put the game back on even terms before the intermission break.

In the third period Jake Harris beat Brian Wilson on the power play to get the eventual game winner.

Harris was taking Ben Solin’s spot on the man advantage after Solin was banished from the game for a hit from behind in the opening two minutes.

Spencer Hewson added another power play goal with less than ten seconds to play to put the icing on the cake.

Both teams were down two players by the end of the game.

Nanaimo lost Solin and then Shawn Guison to injury, although assistant coach Dustin Donaghy was optimistic about the chances of Guison returning for Nanaimo’s interior road trip next week.

Powell River suffered two injuries on the blueline to Jack Long and Callum Volpe.

The Kings outshot the Clippers 34-31 but Nanaimo won the special teams battle going 2/3 on the power play and 5/5 killing penalties.
