Late night vandalism at Nanoose Bay church causes major damage

Oct 6, 2016 | 4:45 PM

PARKSVILLE — A Nanoose Bay church has been hit hard by what Oceanside RCMP call a senseless act of vandalism.

Cpl. Jesse Foreman reports thousands of dollars in damages to St. Mary’s Anglican Church on Powder Point Road either late Tuesday or early Wednesday morning when a garden hose was used to soak the carpet and flood the basement.

“The weather stripping was removed from the door and the hose was jammed inside and left to run inside the church.” says Foreman.

The hose from a neighbouring property was attached to a nozzle outside the church and then left on for a significant amount of time, according to Foreman.

He says damages to the church could have have been much worse.

“There was no end to the damages it could have caused. It was just good luck that somebody was checking on the church first thing in the morning or who knows how extensive the damages could have been.”

Foreman says at this point police don’t have much to go on after little information came forth when police quized area neighbours.

“Somebody must know something about this,” says Foreman. “It’s a senseless act of mischief and this kind of stuff is totally unacceptable.”

Anybody with information on the vandalism to St. Mary’s Anglican Church in Nanoose Bay is asked to call Oceanside RCMP or Crimestoppers.
