Clippers come up short against Vernon at the BCHL Showcase

Sep 23, 2016 | 9:49 PM

CHILLIWACK – A fantastic start for the Nanaimo Clippers but they fell short in a 6-3 loss to the Vernon Vipers on Friday.

Adam Pilotte scored just over a minute into the game but the Vipers got goals 1:40 apart half way through the first from Steven Jandric and Carter Stephenson to take a lead to the locker room.

Vernon extended the lead to 4-1 when Jandric scored again on the power play in the second, and Ryan Brushett dangled his way to the front of the net.

After a Clipper time out Matt Kowalski deflected a puck past Ty Taylor to cut the lead to 4-2.

Michael Ufberg’s goal beat Austin Roden to give the Vipers another three goal lead, but Ben Solin’s deflection goal made it 5-3 after 40 minutes.

The only goal of the third period was a strange bounce that was credited to Carter Stephenson on a Vernon power play.

Vernon outshot Nanaimo 36-33 and the Vipers won the special teams battle by going 3/7 on the man advantage while the Clippers were 0/5.

Nanaimo is now 4-5 all time at the BCHL Showcase with a game coming up against Salmon Arm on Saturday morning at 10 a.m.

One of the intriguing battles will be Nanaimo’s 17th ranked power play against the Silverbacks 17th ranked penalty kill.

Salmon Arm has yet to win this season. The Clippers will have a sense of urgency to avoid a two game losing streak.
