Nanaimo SPCA warning about fake raffle tickets being sold

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo and District SPCA is putting out a warning about fake raffle tickets.

Manager Leon Davis says he got a call and email Monday afternoon from a concerned person who had bought a raffle ticket from a young man selling door-to-door.

Davis says the ticket looks very homemade and they don’t have any official raffles going on at the moment.

“What usually would happen is if we had a raffle we would have locations, like the shelter, or partner locations that would sell raffle tickets for us. It’s not that we would never go door-to-door, but we have never done that to date,” says Davis.

Davis says if anyone does see something like that, they should call the branch to check if it’s legitimate, noting any ticket from them would certainly have contact details, a raffle licence number and some other legal stuff.

He calls the news frustrating.

“We do rely completely on donations, we don’t have any operational funding from any levels of government at all, so it’s really important to us that our donors that we stay engaged with are being treated fairly and not being scammed by people because it can also put a bad taste in people’s mouths.”

Davis says he also has concern for the safety of people when you have unknown people who are effectively committing fraud going door-to-door.

It’s important to check with their branch if you’re unsure in the future, he says, because it’s not unheard of for third parties to do fundraising for them that they aren’t aware of.

Davis says if anyone comes to your door trying to sell this particular raffle ticket, you should call police right away.
