Clippers add huge defenseman Ian Beck

NANAIMO — They don’t get much bigger than the Nanaimo Clippers new defenseman.

Chicago native Ian Beck is 6’6 and 225 pounds.

He’s a stay at home type blueliner who put up 2 points and 16 penalty minutes in 22 games in the North American Hockey League with Austin last year.

Nanaimo did a great job of shoring up their own end in Sunday’s win over Powell River, but other than that they’ve been leaking goals in their preseason games and in their season opener.

Sometimes with a big defenseman skating can be a concern, but after seeing him in practice Coach Mike Vandekamp was happy with his foot speed.

The Clippers will look to spoil Alberni Valley’s home Opener Friday as they play their first road game of the season.

Last weekend the Bulldogs got the better of the Clippers in a 4-1 game that opened the season for both teams.

Puck drop Friday is 7pm at Weyerhauser arena.
