Clippers take over in the third, beat Powell River 5-2

Sep 11, 2016 | 7:10 PM

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Clippers were waiting for a breakout game, and Sunday that had it against the Powell River Kings.

It was a 5-2 Clippers victory over the team they beat in the last two Island Division Finals.

In the first period Carter Turnbull put the Kings on the board on an early power play, but Shawn Guison picked up his first BCHL goal to tie it just 13 seconds later on a shot from the right point.

Matt Creamer gave the Clippers a 2-1 lead heading into the intermissions with his second goal in as many games.

The only goal of the second period was scored just after a Nanaimo penalty had come to an end when Tristan Mullan snapped a shot in from the right wing that fooled Austin Roden.

There was also a fight in the second period with Austin Crossley throwing punches with the Kings Jake Kohlhauser.

It was Crossley’s first fight in Junior and he did very well against the veteran from Powell River.

In the third period new Clipper Tristan Crozier jammed home a loose puck on a Nanaimo man advantage to give the Clippers the lead back, and Ben Solin added some insurance with a fantastic individual effort that he finished off in behind Adamyk.

Jake Harris sealed the deal with an empty netter.

Final shots finished 44-26 in favour of the Clippers with Nanaimo going 1/1 on the man advantage and the Kings connecting at 1/6.

Sunday’s Three Stars were 1) Ben Solin 2) Matt Creamer 3) Liam Lawson

The victory evens Nanaimo’s record at 1-1 while Powell River falls to 0-3 to start the season.

Next up the Clippers travel to Alberni Valley next Friday as the look to spoil the Bulldogs home opener and get some revenge for a 4-1 loss to the Dogs at Frank Crane Arena on opening night.
