‘Amazing places’ being sought in Oceanside

Aug 28, 2016 | 5:48 AM

PARKSVILLE — The Oceanside region attracts a lot of visitors in the summer months.

Tourism officials are now looking at how they can increase numbers in off-peak times.

Parksville Qualicum Beach Tourism, Destination BC and Vancouver Island University are joining forces to promote the ‘Amazing Places’ program.

Tourism spokesman Blain Sepos says next month they will be asking visitors to pick their favourite spots to visit in the Mount Arrowsmith Biosphere Region.

“Amazing Places really is an effort to get people, both locals and visitors, to identify those amazing natural places that have ecological significance in our region. The hope is that by getting people involved in identifying these places that they’ll take more time to explore them, especially in the off-season,” said Sepos.

Anyone that has visited or walked around the Oceanside area knows there is no shortage of spots to choose from.

“It seems like everywhere you turn around in this area there’s a spot that somebody has identified as their favourite place. For some people it may be the high profile places like Rathtrevor Beach, for others it might be the trails behind Springwood Park in Parksville.”

To be nominated, along with ecological significance, the site has to be amazing and accessible to the public.

10 sites will be chosen and will receive signage explaining their ecological value.
