Lantzville foothills fire declared out, crews leave scene

Aug 24, 2016 | 10:48 AM

LANTZVILLE — Lantzville Fire Chief Rob Chatton says their crews left the scene of the fire around one o’clock Wednesday afternoon.

He says he’s happy to report the fire was declared out early this afternoon.

It’s now up to the property owner, Chatton says, to patrol the site for the next few days to make sure there are no flare-ups.

Chatton says nothing has been confirmed on the cause of the fire, but nothing has been ruled out either.

EARLIER:

The brush fire in the Lantzville foothills is in mop up stage today.

Yesterday the fire grew to .8 hectares before crews were able to get it 100% contained last night.

Lantzville Fire Chief Rob Chatton says fighfighters went to the site this morning to check for hot spots.

“The fire’s still 100 percent contained,” said Chatton. “Ten small hotspots were located, which is better than expected. Those have been addressed and crews are currently patrolling to ensure that nothing else has popped up in that time frame.”

Chatton notes they still don’t have a cause of the fire, and that job will be handled by the Coastal Fire Centre.

“Coastal Fire, this is their expertise. They’re still continuing to investigate it and do their thing. So everything’s still on the table, there’s no firm cause, or nothing’s ruled out really at this point.”

Yesterday the CFC said a lightning strike could have been the cause, but the possibility it was human caused was being looked into as well.

Chatton expects Lantzville Fire crews will finish up patrols this afternoon and allow a private contractor to monitor the fire site.
