One Nanaimo pool re-opens, another set to close for maintenance

NANAIMO — One Nanaimo pool has re-opened, but another is closing soon for annual maintenance.

Beban Park pool and weight room re-opened Monday after more than a month of maintenance work, including extensive cleaning, replacing missing tiles, and replacing the lobby’s glass roof.

Now, it’s the Nanaimo Aquatic Centre’s turn, as the Third Street facility will shut down for annual maintenance August 29.

It’s scheduled to re-open on September 26.

The work at the NAC includes replacing the three-metre diving board and stand.

The city of Nanaimo notes that the Beban Park pool and weight room will have extended hours during the aquatic centre closure.

The closures come as several delegations are set to appear in front of Nanaimo council on Monday night to offer their opinions on a recommendation in the Core Services Review.

That recommendation, which has received no endorsement from staff or council, tells council and the city to consider a three-month pool shutdown annually, to save approximately $280,000 a year.
