NANAIMO — RCMP have issued a brief update on Tuesday morning’s incident.

Police say they have finished processing the crime scene at the detachment and they are keeping the driver of the car in custody.

Investigators are interviewing known contacts of the suspect to try to learn more about a possible motive.

EARLIER:

A bizarre incident in the parking lot of Nanaimo’s RCMP Detachment.

It happened around 8:30am Tuesday, when a vehicle came into the lot and accelerated into a dumpster.

The male driver then hit a police cruiser with three officers inside.

There were no injuries, and Corporal Jon Stuart says police are still trying to piece together what happened.

“It’s too early to say. We don’t know what his motive might have been, but at this point it doesn’t appear to be any kind of accident,” said Stuart.

The driver was taken to NRGH as a precaution, and the incident left Milton Street and Fitzwilliam closed for over two hours.

Stuart says two other police officers were nearly injured when the vehicle knocked the dumpster over.
