UPDATE: Three-year-old Union Bay boy missing overnight found safe

Aug 15, 2016 | 8:46 AM

UNION BAY — Relief in Union Bay now that a three-year-old boy has been found safe and sound.

RCMP and Comox Valley Ground Search and Rescue responded to a call about the boy wandering away from his home on Green Avenue in Union Bay around eight o’clock Sunday night.

Const. Rob Gardner says Comox Valley SAR, police dog services and an unmanned aerial vehicle searched throughout the night.

At its peak Monday morning, the search featured about 65 SAR members from Comox Valley, Nanaimo, Campbell River, Cowichan, Arrowsmith, Ladysmith and Alberni Valley, according to Gardner.

He says at about 10:30 this morning, the three-year-old was found near Langley Lake, across the Inland Island Highway from Green Avenue.

“I guess there’s some logging roads that connect across the highway. He must have went over an overpass,” says Gardner.

The boy was found near the lake, in good condition, says Gardner.

“Sounds like he had been feeding himself berries all night, his face was covered in berries.”

Gardner says SAR crews said Langley Lake is about two kilometres from his house, as the crow flies, but it’s probably more like five or six kilometres by road.

“Lots of old logging roads in that area, so he would’ve travelled along the roadways.”

Gardner says he’s not aware of any medical issues with the boy.
