Local political expert says Clinton likely to face similar backlash as Obama

NANAIMO — A former VIU political analyst says being a woman shouldn’t hurt Democrat Hilary Clinton’s campaign for U.S. President.

Allan Warnke says the backlash surrounding electing a female president stirs up memories of current President Barack Obama’s first campaign.

“It was similar in 2008, that oh no, a black president can’t be elected because of the backlash and so on. But I think we have seen a lot of improvement in terms of the approaches of the candidates themselves, what kind of quality of candidate are they and that sort of thing,” said Warnke.

The fact that Clinton is a woman shouldn’t hurt her campaign, in Warnke’s opinion.
