VIJHL’s Buccaneers open training camp

Aug 12, 2016 | 3:27 PM

NANAIMO — The Nanaimo Buccaneers training camp runs this weekend at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.

Team spokesperson Brenda Levesque says they’ll have a scrimmage game at 6pm on Friday, with the final scrimmage slated for Sunday at 9am.

Levesque says Coach Dan Lemmon will have lots of decisions to make before the team plays its first preseason game September 1 in Victoria.

“We have 47 players coming to date, which gives us six goaltenders and 41 skaters, so it’ll be a pretty big camp,” said Levesque.

Levesque adds that fans can expect to see a team loaded with players who are from Nanaimo.

“Local presence is huge for us.  We’ve always had a mandate to have at least 50 percent of the team local.  This year there will probably be more than that.  We have some really strong local talent that we’re quite interested in.”

As usual the Buccaneers will play their home games on Thursday nights at the Nanaimo Ice Centre this year.

The season opener is September 8 against the Oceanside Generals at the NIC.
