Construction of Parksville Rail Trail ahead of schedule

PARKSVILLE — Construction on the E&N Rail Trail linking Parksville and Coombs is ahead of schedule, according to the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Parks and Trails Coordinator Joan Michel says the 7 kilometre trail is slated to be done in early December. Initial estimates had hoped the project would be finished by the end of the year.

She says there are a few environmentally sensitive wetland areas that the RDN and their contractor are dealing with.

“We have some fish creeks, Morningstar is a fish creek, Romney Creek isn’t. Even if they’re not fish creeks, working around water is a special consideration. Special permits are required for it and all of those have been well examined,” said Michel.

Michel says crews have been making good time and things have been going smoothly.

“So far so good. They’ve made excellent time and initial inspections, including environmental, have shown that everything is in order. Haven’t seen any trouble yet and certainly don’t expect to.”

The $2.6 million dollar trail will link between Springwood Park in Parksville and Station Road in Coombs.
