Heavy Rain Causes Minor Flooding in Nanaimo

Aug 2, 2016 | 10:50 AM

NANAIMO — Early Tuesday morning flash thundershowers led to minor flooding in Nanaimo.

The city of Nanaimo’s manager of utilities John Elliott says water pooling has been causing challenges throughout the city, most notably on the Parkway at the Northfield and Mostar Road exits, as well as in central Nanaimo on Labieaux at Dorman Roads, and the Shenton/Kenworth Road areas.

Elliott says public works crews are busy clearing storm drains to minimize flooding.

He says the general public can help city crews and also protect their homes from being impacted by clearing curbside as well as private drains and culverts.

Elliott points out that a few calls to the city were made Tuesday morning about private homes being hit with flooding, but says he hasn’t heard of anything too serious.

“Couple carport reports having excessive water in them, otherwise, just our crews going around to the intersections to make sure the catch basins are clear,” said Elliott.

He says motorists should take precautions when driving through areas with pooling water.

“Obviously don’t hit it with speed, take it very slow and if there are cars there, don’t pass them and just take your time.”

People who see clogged city culverts and drains can call the city of Nanaimo’s public works department at 250-758-5222.

Elliott reminds people that sandbags are available at their public works yard at 2020 Labieaux Road that people can pick up to use.
