Man hit in head with bat during fight in central Nanaimo

NANAIMO — One man spent the night in jail, another in hospital, after a fight in Nanaimo on Tuesday.

RCMP Const. Gary O’Brien says a 52 year old man was hit in the head with a bat, at least once, by a 58 year old man during a fight at a home on Barclay Road, off Labieux, around 9 o’clock Tuesday.

He says the 52 year old was found bleeding from his head after the altercation.

O’Brien says the men weren’t roommates or neighbours, but they did know each other.

“There was a prior relationship between the two,” said O’Brien.

The 58 year old was held overnight and released Wednesday morning on a Promise to Appear. He could be facing a charge of assault causing bodily harm and will be back in court in October.

O’Brien says at this point they don’t know what started the fight.

“All we know is there was an altercation between the two of them. As to what happened, that’s up to investigators to determine.”

Police got a search warrant and went into the home on Wednesday morning. They seized various items and the bat that is believed to have been used.

The victim’s injuries weren’t as serious as first thought, and luckily he only needed stitches.
