Bike Registration Clinic in Nanaimo

Jul 13, 2016 | 12:24 PM

Police in Nanaimo want to see 1000 bicycles registered by the end of 2017.

They’re promoting a new registration app called 529 garage at a free clinic Wednesdsay at Arrowsmith Bikes from 6pm – 8pm.

RCMP Constable Gary O’Brien says the 529 garage app (https://project529.com) is spreading across the province.

“Not only in our community but in communities all across British Columbia I notice Prince George was doing their’s last weekend.  There’s been a number of registrations throughout the lower mainland as well.  The success is based on the numbers, the more people that register the greater chance you have of getting your bike back,” said O’Brien.

O’Brien says typically less than five percent of stolen bikes are recovered, and there are about 250-300 thefts a year in Nanaimo.

He believes the app can make a difference.

“Most of the bike shops see the value of this and they will be registering the bikes.  They have these stickers, and the stickers what it does, it allows you to register with the app.  You can register on your own without the sticker but there’s an extra layer of protection.  So that’s the beauty of having it registered with the bike shops.”

There will be more bike registration clinics announced in the near future.
